Piecemeal Defense of a Romantic Imagination

Current mood:gearing up

this is what you get for my watching documentaries.  edits may never follow:

C.S. Lewis and Tolkien, a devout christian and devout catholic.
were reacting to the “wish fulfillment” rationale of Freud
they were wrestling with the new psychology, god not existing, being angry with him for not existing.  C.S. Lewis was pissed about not being allowed to believe in fantasy.  he defended it.  kept god.

joy is the desiring of desire.
a desire that is greater than any capacity to satisfy it.
joy is not desire of a thing.  joy is the desire of desire..

“i had been far more anxious to avoid suffering than to achieve delight.”
-C.S. Lewis

an intense longing for something that can’t be named.  a longing that can not be satiated by any human relationship.  that is a signpost to a creator?

you have to look at things obliquely at things for what’s right and true.  thinking about them gets you to thinking about what your thinking.  “sneak past the watchful dragons of self-consciousness.”
